Join the newly reformed NZTrio at Auckland Art Gallery for the 2nd in its 2019 concert series: Tectonic Impact on Sunday, October 13th for a live evening performance in the stunning North Atrium.

Amalia Hall (violin)
Ashley Brown (cello)
Somi Kim (piano)

TECTONIC IMPACT

NZTrio’s 2019 series is all Empires and Superpowers – the fundamental forces that shape our land, our population, our society. In this 250th anniversary of first encounters between Māori and European, the Tectonic series focuses on immigration and colonisation in our land. Each concert charts a musical course from Captain Cook’s homeland in old England, to the sounds of Aotearoa prior to his arrival on these shores. We examine this European genre, piano trio music, as it has developed within Aotearoa’s unique culturally intertwined society, and compare with the result of development within a British environment.

Then we direct our searchlight at old Cold War Superpowers and the struggle for supremacy. Towering masterpieces from USA and Russia/USSR loom menacingly in an icy standoff.

Frank Bridge (UK): Saltarello
Martin Lodge (NZ): (new work)
Frank Bridge (UK): Intermezzo
Ross Harris (NZ): Senryu
Rebecca Clarke (UK): Piano Trio
Alfred Schnittke (USSR): Trio
Daniel Schnyder (USA): Piano Trio

Approx. 90 mins plus interval followed by complimentary drinks and nibbles.

NZTrio’s 2019 series is all Empires and Superpowers – the fundamental forces that shape our land, our population, our society. The first in the series, Tectonic Shift, explores the dynamics of Cook’s arrival in Aotearoa, contrasting the music of his place and time with the music of the Māori explorers who navigated the waters before him. It examines the extraordinary social, cultural and political transformation of Aotearoa by contrasting Taonga Pūoro, contemporary NZ music and traditional and contemporary repertoire from the UK, and then zooms out to view the global landscape, with music from the Cold War Superpowers.
